Narrative for Thriller Scene
Taking into consideration what I have researched about thriller films: Mise-En-Scene, Cinematography and Conventions all within the thriller genre, this is the first idea I have thought of.
Overall Idea
The story line of my scene is typical of most thriller films such as Scream, The Strangers and films alike. A secluded location away from the outside world, which is out of the way from help from anyone. Female Victim most likely to be blonde as in my research from conventions they are portrayed as weak because of stereotypes. The female and the masked killer will be around Low Key Lighting as it creates shadows and suspense. Killer can be seen in the distance following the victim but barely seen so that it is not obvious to the victim. Killer comes into focus under a light to create a sudden shock to the audience and disappears quickly again. To create this light from lamppost can be used as they are a light source and shadows to hide the killer. It becomes apparent to the audience what is going to happen as they can see the killer gaining on the victim. The victim can be killed or just knocked out as the killer maybe torturing victims so either a knife to kill or some form of cloth with some liquid to knock the victim out when en-haled. In addition the victim doesn't need to be killed as the ending of the scene could just be a reaction shot. Although its typical of most thriller films for the victim to be killed.
Mise-En-Scene
Setting and Iconography- Setting will be a secluded location as most thrillers take place usually in secluded location, the location could be a house like the film The Strangers or Scream or even a dark secluded alleyway or walkway. Props could be the Killers weapon for example a knife, or the cloth. They will be apparent to the audience as they audience will create a relationship with the character once they see the killing weapon as they know the characters life expectancy has been shorten dramatically. Alike the setting if they are secluded they will also create a bond as they are imagining what they would if they were put into that situation as well.
Costume Hair and Make Up- The killer will be black clothes so that he blends in with the shadows and is apparent to the audience that he is not there while with a mask to take away his identity and add an element of mystery to the film. Meanwhile the victim will be wearing causal clothes so the audience can relate to the victim.
Facial Expression and Body Language- Feelings of the victim will be apparent to the audience as there will be use of close ups of the victims face throughout the scene to show her emotions. Her feelings will be about the setting and how she reacts to being on her own in a secluded location scared all on her own. Meanwhile the killers facial expressions will not be apparent as he will be masked drawing away all information of their emotions. But his body language will show that he is a confident killer walking at a slower pace than the victim.
Lighting and Colour - There will be Low Key Lighting throughout the whole of the scene as LKL creates lots of shadows which creates suspense for the audience as they cannot see the full setting as if they were in daytime. There maybe a use of the colour red for the use of blood as the victim maybe killed by the knife.
Positing of Characters- to draw attention to them. The victim will be mostly central to the screen whereas the kill will be in the background slowly becoming more central to the screen as he gets closer to the victim.
Cinematography
Close up- Will be used to express the emotions of the victim up close and how she reacts to situations within the scene and also to create a bond with the audience as they are seeing there emotions up close and taking it all in as they fill a part of the characters life.
Long Shot- Will be used to show the distance between the victim and the killer focused on the killer to empathize that they are a part of the scene but also show a large amount of the setting so the audience get an idea of what the setting is like and to create a sudden shock of a dark figure following the victim.
High Angle and Low Angle - Will be used to show weakness of the victim and dominance of the killer. High Angle will be used to show the weakness of the character by making the victim look small and out of reach of help of the audience. Whereas the Low Angle will be used to show the power of the killer over the victim creating suspense in both angles for the audience so they can bond with the victim.
Point of View- Will be used to show the audience the same as what the character sees so the audience feel that they are part of the scene and empathizing for the character as they experiencing the same as them.
Conventions
I have mentioned some of the things I will be using in my scene. I will be using a bladed weapon or even a cloth will a substance to knock the character out. Also I will be using a masked killer to add an element of mystery to the scene and lastly the most obvious of all a blond female victim.
But I haven considered a soundtrack which is typical of films under the thriller genre. This is an important element as there will be no dialogue in my scene so this is key to creating a good thriller scene. So when the victim is walking through the house like Scream or an alleyway. There should be a tense slow paced music to create tension for the audience to give them an indicator that something is going to happen to the victim.
Evaluation
I have taken all important factor that are key to create a good scene specific to the thriller genre. I have come up with a narrative for the scene based on films around the genre that I have seen clips of watched fully. And taken into consideration the camera angles that are effective in creating a link with the audience because of the mood that they create. But also what the audience expects to see and hear when they are watching a film of the thriller genre. I have taken my idea from such thriller films such as The Strangers and Scream as they used hidden identity and scream uses bladed weapons on the victims. I felt this was the best films to base my idea around as they are simpistic and effective in creating a bond with the characters and the audience.
This post demonstrates a good understanding of what a conventional thriller narrative should include and this is because you have considered the opening sequence in some detail.
ReplyDeleteYour idea, clearly shows your imagination of a thriller and what you would to portray, but further points on your inspirations are needed.
Also you need to consider the role of your audience and how your narrative will appeal to them in further detail
